The Rajasthan Prisons Department serves the State by keeping in safe custody the persons forwarded to prisons of state. The prisoners are kept in safe, humane, cost-efficient, and adequately secure and supervised environment of prisons and provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens. The Department has been established to provide progressive and humane care for prison inmates, to professionalize the service, and to ensure consistent and centralized administration of the state prisons in operation.
Today, the department consists of 119 prison institutions, 2 regional offices, a Central Office (headquarters), and 1 staff training centre. The regional offices and Central Office provide administrative oversight and support to departmental correctional institutions.
The department is responsible for the custody and care of more than 17,000 inmates. The department protects public safety by ensuring that offenders serve their sentences of imprisonment in accordance with the law. It helps in reducing the potential for future criminal activity by encouraging inmates to participate in a range of programs that have been proven to reduce recidivism. The department's approximately 3,000 employees ensure the security of state prisons; provide inmates with needed programs and services, and model mainstream values.
